Airlie Beach to Host Spectacular Pop-Up Ferris Wheel Trial
Airlie Beach is set to shine this winter with the arrival of a dazzling Ferris Wheel, which has been approved for a limited five-month trial at Fairy Tree Park, adjacent to Airlie Creek. Operated by Xtra Ordinary Events, this exciting attraction aims to bring fresh, family-friendly fun to the heart of the foreshore precinct.
Bringing More Family Fun to the Foreshore
Feedback from recent community consultations has indicated that both locals and visitors are seeking engaging daytime and evening activities. In response, the Whitsunday Regional Council has granted a temporary license to introduce a full-size Ferris Wheel, inspired by the popular "Reef Eye" installation in Cairns. With stunning coastal views and a gentle ride experience, the organisers hope to enhance the vibrancy of the entertainment areas along the waterfront.
Key Dates & Trial Phases
- Early June 2025: Heavy vehicles and cranes will arrive to assemble the Ferris Wheel's base, tower, spokes, and gondolas. Initial parking closures and temporary fencing will be in place, with traffic controllers managing local access.
- June – October 2025: The Ferris Wheel will be open to the public daily from 10am to 10pm, offering low-cost tickets with exclusive discounts for locals.
- September – October 2025: The Council will seek community feedback through the "Have Your Say" portal to assess the wheel's impact on enjoyment and precinct activation.
- November – December 2025: All consultation data will be reviewed to determine whether the Ferris Wheel could become a permanent feature at Airlie Beach.
What to Expect During Installation
To minimise disruption, only a semi-trailer and crane will access the site, with trained spotters and traffic management in place to ensure safety. Protective mesh will safeguard the turf, and fencing will be gradually reduced as the assembly progresses. A generator backup will guarantee uninterrupted lighting after dark, showcasing the wheel's graceful silhouette against the Coral Sea. The careful orientation of the site will preserve key view corridors while providing riders with 360° panoramas of the foreshore and Conway National Park.
Ride Details & Ticket Information
